Upon completion in December 1970, the station had the capacity of generating 400,000 h.p. of electricity which then boosted Newfoundland hydro's total generating capacity to 1,000,000 h.p. The generating units require 195 million gallons of sea water each day. The water is returned to the sea as pure as when first taken, only twenty degrees warmer. The plant can burn 350,000 gallons of oil a day at peak capacity. Four great storage tanks with a combined capacity of 30 million gallons, stand nearby. That is enough for eighty days continuous operation without a refill. The three 300 foot high smokestacks of the generating station at Duff's can be seen for miles around and across Conception Bay.
