Art Galleries
-
The Rooms
(Art Gallery, Museum and Archives) opened
in July 2005 and is located in the large building
west of the Roman Catholic Basilica a few minutes
walk from downtown. They have a wonderful view and
I think have a restaurant.
-
Resouce Centre for the Arts (RCA) Gallery.
This is downstairs at the LSPU Hall and is the waiting area
after buying a ticket for upstairs events, or for intermission,
and in that respect is similar to the one at the Vancouver East
Cultural Centre. If no events are on upstairs I believe the
gallery is open until 5 p.m. This may be moving out of the
LSPU soon (2008).
-
The Christina Parker Gallery is at 7 Plank Road which is near
Job Street and Water Street West and not far from St. Patrick's
Cathedral.
-
Eastern Edge Gallery is an artists co-op I think and is
on Harbour Drive I think not far from the rear of the
Murray Premises.
-
Devon House Craft Gallery has a shop for sale of crafts and
I think upstairs there is a gallery and workshop space for
textile and other art forms. This is very close to
Hotel Newfoundland.
-
The James Baird Gallery is on the second floor of Wordplay
Bookstore which has a little coffee shop now on the main floor.
Museums
-
The Rooms
(Art Gallery, Museum and Archives) opened
in July 2005 and is located in the large building
west of the Roman Catholic Basilica a few minutes
walk from downtown.
-
Commissariat House --- not far from Quidi Vidi lake. An old restored house,
complete with table settings, antiques, displays.
-
Cape Spear --- there are some old barracks, at which weekly late
summer folk concerts take place in late summer, usually Thursdays,
hosted by Anita Best unless she is touring. I think in recent
years (now 2008) these concerts have been suspended but I hope
they get funding to resume them.
-
Signal Hill. The tower and nearby museum have lots of displays.
There is now a Newfoundland Science
Centre at the Murray Premises downtown,
and the Johnson Geo Centre halfway up Signal Hill.
