Through a focus on Shakespeare, we are a cultural cornerstone, enriching community and artistic life in Newfoundland and Labrador. Our work resonates beyond the stage.
Shakespeare By The Sea Festival Inc., a community-based organization, produces and promotes artistic works with a focus on Shakespeare. Our organization unites seasoned and developing talent and aspires to excel in all aspects of our work.
The Shakespeare by the Sea Festival is the longest running outdoor summer theatre event in the St. John's area. Since 1993, the Festival has been performing the works of that famous Bard all around the St. John's area – from the cliff-top meadows of Logy Bay to the historic World War Two bunkers at Cape Spear National Historic Site of Canada – from the cobblestoned courtyard of the Murray Premises to the lush landscapes of Bowring Park.
Our perseverance in the face of fair weather and foul (both literally and figuratively) has made us a solid fixture in the community. There are so many places that inspire us in the outdoors of our beautiful province – you never know where we may turn up next!
By utilizing a combination of seasoned performers and aspiring talent, we have also provided a unique artistic opportunity in classical theatre, an opportunity otherwise unknown in this region. We are proud to know that it is a challenge to find many members of the St. John's arts community who have not worked with the Festival at one time or another.
